AE111 + Adaptronic e420d + 1.75L Stroker kit

R.N.R Autosport have been a dealer for Adaptronic ecu for 3 years now,we have a lot of projects and have worked with various engines. We are amazed with the flexibility of the Adaptronic ecu and its value for money. It runs very smooth and almost like a stock ecu and comes with a lot of features for its price.

Here we have a Stroked 4age 20v. The engine displacement have been increased to 1.75L from 1.6L.It runs Adaptronic e420d ecu with few other add on goodies to the engine.

 Base engine is 20v Blacktop

Here is the result with RON95.

R.N.R Autosport have been Dyno Dynamics for tuning every customer vehicle since it is easy to tune the part throttle with this dyno. The downside of it is its figures are lower than Dynojet and most other dynos.
It makes customer very sad but on road performance is what more important.
For us,dyno is just a tool to help us tune the engine, not to compare horsepower.

Toyota Corolla SEG 4WD with 4AGE 20V + Adaptronic e420d

This Corolla SEG 4WD is a very rare car in Malaysia, this unit is fully imported from Japan.

The car have original 4AGE 20v fitted from factory and a 4WD transmission.Due to the 4WD the power output at the wheels is very much lower than the 2WD version. This car has been fitted with 272 cams and 4-2-1 extractor.Adaptronic ecu was chosen for engine management.

Untuned vs tuned, huge increase, but still pretty much lower than its 2WD counterpart. We guess that the transmission taking so much power from the engine.

Toyota Corolla AE101 with 4age 20v + E-manage Ultimate

Final result of this tuning.Again this is a healthy engine with this sorts of power output.Engine is stock except for an aftermarket 4-1 extractor.

Toyota Corolla SEG with 4AGE 20V Blacktop + E-manage Blue.

Hi,we have another 4ag 20v with e-manage coming. The e-manage is very popular with automotive enthusiasts in engine tuning.

 Stock engine.

End result, green is before and red is after tuned, this is normal HP output for stock healthy engine.Car should go much faster with 15 inch wheels rather than 16 inch the owner is using now. :)

Toyota Corolla SE with 4AGTE + Adaptronic e420d tuning

Hi,first entry in 6 months time.Been very busy to update this blog but here we go.

Old but don't underestimate what it could do

Here is the final figure. 1.4 Bar of boost and capable of revving to 9000rpm in a small light car is fun, just need find better traction though. Through AFR and ignition tune we manage to better the original tune especially at the top end power and torque. This engine is pretty durable, for an old small motor,it is amazing its still holding up. And we haven't really run it on full boost yet (1.8 bar capable). Turbo is T04E,stock 4AGZE bottom.

4AG 20V + Adaptronic e420d ECU + Tomei Poncam

Hi,R.N.R Autosport was approached by a customer to have the Adaptronic e420d installed and tuned for his 4AGE 20V Blacktop engine with Tomei Poncam, all others are stock except for 0.8mm metal headgasket and adjustable pulley on the exhaust cam. The VVT is retained.

The engine, fairly stock. This is our first time tune on DYNOJET. I still favor the Dynamics more as its better in steady state mapping.

The blue graph is stock ecu + Poncam
The red graph is Adatpronic e420d + Poncam
Very healthy increase in power and torque, and also removed the torque dip with the stock ecu.As you can see the stock ecu also have a dangerously lean AFR across the midrange.
Fuel is RON 97.

Custom wiring harness for 4AG 20V with Adaptronic e420d

This is custom made wiring harness for my brother 4AG 20V equipped KE70. This harness is fully shrinked wrap and designed to be fully plug and play, all connections to body harness is through connector, makes it easy to be removed for engine maintenance in the future should we need to take the engine out.

Ecu of choice is none other than the Adaptronic e420d,this ecu is well suited for the 4AG engine, being able to run sequential injection and ignition (COP conversion),closed loop fuel control, closed loop idle control, knock control, launch control, air conditioner control and a lot of other functions. And the biggest factor is its price, its lower than similarly spec ecu. Please contact R.N.R Autosport for more info.

AE101 SEG + 4AG 20V Blacktop + E-manage

Another AE101 SEG with Blacktop 20V and E-manage Blue (Actually it is EM-CON by M7).His engine is equipped with the usual bolt on goodies, trumpets and a Tomei Pon-Cam 256-264deg.

Good result there.Impressed with the cams, really bump the torque significantly to 160Nm (117lb/ft), almost 10Nm increase over stock engine with stock cam.I reckon with a standalone ecu it will be better overall and trim that torque dip above 6000rpm.

Well, there is always a room for improvement.

Toyota LE + 4AG 20V + Adaptronic e420c

This car is old but with a new engine,it can perform well chasing the new cars, but the body and chassis need serious strengthening. It is fitted with 4AGE 20v Silvertop, with Adaptronic e420c for engine controls and Plug and Play 4AG 20v harness (Previously on stock ecu). The engine spec is pretty much stock, with stock cams and piston, only with 0.8mm metal head gasket and custom trumpets. It is also tuned with 4-2-1 extractor and a 2.3 inch straight exhaust pipe which exit just below the driver seat floorpan.Fuel is local RON95.And i should mention that the engine is not in a very good condition,it was smoking and consumes engine oil very badly but owner insist to tune it before tearing it down for rebuilt.

The end result (blue graph).

This is a huge gain over stock untuned map(red graph),i am really pleased with this considering the engine is relatively stock.Almost 144 WHP and 114 lb/ft or torque, that is about 155Nm.It is quite responsive too.Owner is pleased. We are happy for him too.

AE101 4AGE 20v + Adaptronic e420c install and tuning

A customer come in a AE101 corolla swapped with 4AGE 20v. He wants a plug and play installation for his Adaptronic e420c,so we made up a plug and play harness for his 4AG 20v.

Installation was quick and straight to the dyno.

End result is 131.8 WHP for a stock blacktop 4AGE 20v.
This is not the best reading i have with the 4AG and Adaptronic, the engine is knocking so bad and i can't raise the ignition timing too much.We suspect there is something wrong with the engine,so the customer will send it for checking.A healthy stock 20V should make aroudn 135 to 140whp and around 110lb/ft of torque.

Another E-manage (EM-CON) tuning...SEG AE101 with 4AGE 20V 6 Speed.

 Car up on dyno

The results, not bad for a 1.6L,slightly modded engine.

Toyota Corolla SEG + 4AGE Silvertop + Blacktop ECU + E-manage

Hi,recently done a E-manage Ultimate installation and tuning on a 4AGE Silvertop 20v with Blacktop ecu. Engine is stock except for trumpets and exhaust adjustable cam pulley. Engine is not at its best performance due to some leaks and this car is on 16 inch wheels.

On Dyno

Results, the orange line is before tuning and the pink one is after tuning.Car goes much stronger and the fuel consumption is decreased.

AE92 + 4AG 20V Blacktop Wiring Conversion

Another project of marrying both stock wiring (AE92 with 2E carburetor) with 4AGE 20V Blacktop engine from AE111 Levin. The owner of this car does not want to install full AE111 4AG 20v wire harness (engine bay+instrument panel) because to retain the stock look of his car interior. Installing the full harness (engine bay+instrument panel harness) from the halfcut will make it more diffcult to graft into the stock wiring without mounting the AE111 dashboard,and mounting the dashboard will make the car look awkward. So the owner choose to leave the dashboard stock.

The stock 2E engine harness being stripped and separated, taking only necessary wires to be used onto the 20v engine.

4AG 20V wiring being stripped and labelled, what is not used is being cut and removed.

ECU during test start up,will be mounted under the dashboard.

Engine installed in the car and up and running. The wiring harness look totally stock factory item.

KE70 4AG 20V Engine dismantled

Few photos of the engine dismantled for rebuild.

4AGE 20V Blacktop + Haltech Platinum Sprint 500

Another Standalone Project for a customer driving a 4AGE 20 Valve Blacktop, this time the chosen engine management is Haltech Platinum Sprint 500.

This is whats included in the ECU package. For this project,a full harness install was opted, this is because the old wires is not in good condition and using whole new wiring have its advantages.

The old wiring is being stripped, and the stock ecu wiring is being separated and pulled out.Only the needed connectors are being saved. On most FWD Toyotas, ecu wiring is bundle together with other wiring such as starter, altenator, and air conditioning, so there is a lot of wires need to be separated and tagged.

The new Haltech harness is being laid out on the stock wiring.

Soldering on progress, all wires soldered and shrink wrapped for trouble free operation.

The finished wiring and installs. This engine run on wasted spark, with stock crank angle sensor still retained. However, the Sprint 500 have the ability to run on complete sequential ignition (4 individual coils) if the owner have enough budget. The engine is completely stock except for the extractor and trumpets.

First time starting is much easier with the VE tuning function on the new Platinum series. Finding base map is quick and idle is much more stable. The car is very much drivable after starting. This whole project takes only 3 nights from wiring to finished dyno tuning.(A total of 8 hours of work)

The dyno result, almost 137whp but with a lot of torque, which is among the highest torque from stock Blacktop i've tuned. Now before you readers saying 'Why using Haltech only managed to get 137whp',honestly  i am also quite dissapointed with this result as i'm targeting at least 140whp,but since me and the owner never dyno the stock HP output before Haltech installation, we cannot judge this HP output is not good. There is a lot of significant factors that determines each engine output other than the ECU.

Firstly is the engine condition itself, how healthy is the internals, then the specs of the exhaust and other add on parts. 3rd is the fuel used, which in this case is RON95. Stand alone and tuner itself can't do magic without the aid of a good internals. What stand alone can do is optimize over the stock ECU. The only way to know how much improvement this Haltech installation gives is by letting the owner drive the car as he is the only one knows better how his car drives before.

A short test drive after dyno confirmed that a significant increase and power and response by the owner. He said his mid silencer is broken which might affect the HP output, however he's very satisfied with the outcome of the stand alone.Plus that launch rev limiter really excites him :-)

We will be back on the dyno for this project to see how much improvement with mildly ported and polished cylinder head with 0.8mm metal head gasket, new mid silencer and adjustable pulley on the exhaust cam, so stay tuned.

Toyota SEG AE111 Blacktop 20v + E-manage Tuning #2

Hi, another 20V Blacktop + E-manage tuning

Engine is stock Blacktop 20V except for HKS 4-2-1 extractor. Rear muffler is stock Levin 20V dual muffler,so its quite restrictive.

The STOCK base reading is on the BLUE curve, the TUNED reading is the RED curve.

Spend almost an hour extracting as much power from the stock ecu,but truely, stock Toyota ecu is very good in keeping their tune the way it is,the is a point where what ever changes made will not yield any significant result. So best today is 127.8 WHP,but with a flat torque curve. This is good for townriding as the owner intention.

He did ask to tune on the cruising mode for more fuel economy, but there is no point tuning the engine in cruise mode bacause the AFR will be always in closed loop feedback, and as Toyota being so superb in keeping their closed loop AFR in control, any changes made will be useless, the ecu will always learns back and keep the AFR within 14.5-15 on cruising. Further more, changes in cruising will cause the Long Term Fuel Trim to be affected and being applied to the overall fuel calculations the next time owner drive his car, and the e-manage tuning will be masked by this, leaving the e-manage tuning 'useless'.

Piggyback have its limit and best for Toyota engine is still Stand alone, unless some company manage to hack the stock ecu and do a re-flash.

Project AE86 20Valve Swap + Freedom ECU update #3

Allright, the car have been tidy up and have been started, we spend some time to check all things are working fine. This 20 Valve running on DLI (Distributorless Ignition) triggered by the Freedom ECU, using 4AGZE ignitor and Mitsubishi coils. Tuning will be done sometime this week, but the car is pretty drivable now with the current map. Starts first time everytime and very smooth running, however the AFR need to be confirmed and fine tuning is needed to make sure everything runs more smoothly. Some photo below..
Engine bay : Short ram intakes and DLI,the extractor will be changed to a bigger one soon.
