4AGE 20V Blacktop + Haltech Platinum Sprint 500

Another Standalone Project for a customer driving a 4AGE 20 Valve Blacktop, this time the chosen engine management is Haltech Platinum Sprint 500.

This is whats included in the ECU package. For this project,a full harness install was opted, this is because the old wires is not in good condition and using whole new wiring have its advantages.

The old wiring is being stripped, and the stock ecu wiring is being separated and pulled out.Only the needed connectors are being saved. On most FWD Toyotas, ecu wiring is bundle together with other wiring such as starter, altenator, and air conditioning, so there is a lot of wires need to be separated and tagged.

The new Haltech harness is being laid out on the stock wiring.

Soldering on progress, all wires soldered and shrink wrapped for trouble free operation.

The finished wiring and installs. This engine run on wasted spark, with stock crank angle sensor still retained. However, the Sprint 500 have the ability to run on complete sequential ignition (4 individual coils) if the owner have enough budget. The engine is completely stock except for the extractor and trumpets.

First time starting is much easier with the VE tuning function on the new Platinum series. Finding base map is quick and idle is much more stable. The car is very much drivable after starting. This whole project takes only 3 nights from wiring to finished dyno tuning.(A total of 8 hours of work)

The dyno result, almost 137whp but with a lot of torque, which is among the highest torque from stock Blacktop i've tuned. Now before you readers saying 'Why using Haltech only managed to get 137whp',honestly  i am also quite dissapointed with this result as i'm targeting at least 140whp,but since me and the owner never dyno the stock HP output before Haltech installation, we cannot judge this HP output is not good. There is a lot of significant factors that determines each engine output other than the ECU.

Firstly is the engine condition itself, how healthy is the internals, then the specs of the exhaust and other add on parts. 3rd is the fuel used, which in this case is RON95. Stand alone and tuner itself can't do magic without the aid of a good internals. What stand alone can do is optimize over the stock ECU. The only way to know how much improvement this Haltech installation gives is by letting the owner drive the car as he is the only one knows better how his car drives before.

A short test drive after dyno confirmed that a significant increase and power and response by the owner. He said his mid silencer is broken which might affect the HP output, however he's very satisfied with the outcome of the stand alone.Plus that launch rev limiter really excites him :-)

We will be back on the dyno for this project to see how much improvement with mildly ported and polished cylinder head with 0.8mm metal head gasket, new mid silencer and adjustable pulley on the exhaust cam, so stay tuned.

4AGE 20 Valve Blacktop Plug and Play Harness for Greddy E-Manage

A customer from Sarawak asked me to make him an E-manage plug and play harness for his 20v Blacktop 4ag,as he doesn't want to cut the original harness.

Used connector but almost as good as new connector

Here is the female connector being soldered to new wires. The wires i'm using is automotive quality AVSS 0.5mm wires.(Exclusive order, hardly can find this in any electrical shop)

Finished plug and play harness with wiring diagram for E-manage installation.Warranty provided for the harness is 3 month but it will last for years.

R.N.R Autosport Project Car

New project @ R.N.R Autosport. Toyota JZX90 Mark 2 conversion

KE70 Restoration Part1

My KE70 restoration project finally started after 1 and a half month waiting for the workshop to clear. The car will be stripped and send to bodyshop for body repair. The body and chassis is in a very bad state as it is already 28 years old and have endured so much abuse. It has been driven to jungle, dragged and drifted.Rust is everywhere and the body have been repaired a few times.

Rusted

Peeled off paint and rusted

Drift abuse

Peeled off paint

Very bad peeled off paint

Drift abuse and peeled off paint

The engine have been drag and drifted, driven like mad (8000rpm shifting most of the time), this Silvertop 20V (with Blacktop ECU) it is still going, allthough not as good as other 20V in term of performance..its been leaking here and there now and consume engine oil. It will be rebuild soon, still thinking what engine management i want to use.The engine bay will be painted too,and will be wire tucked.

Engine is out, wiring and all accesories next.

Finally after 7 years inside the engine bay and never been overhauled since..for the first time it is out of the car! Look at that gearbox covered with mud,a testament to drifting.

Hopefully this project will give new life to the KE70,stay tuned for updates!

Corolla SEG AE101 Blacktop 20V Auto + E-manage tuning

A friend introduced me to a toyota seg owner who wants to tune his e-manage.This is my first time dyno tune an auto 20v,it is quite difficult as it need delicate control of the throttle in order to maintain the car in particular gear, hence it is hard to get consistency on every runs.

None the less, the base run made is quite good and it is very hard for me to squeeze the every bit of extra power and torque.I got it after almost 30 runs, but there is a strange torque dip at 3500 up to 4500,i spend another 47 runs just to tuneout the dip but after using all tricks up my sleeve, still couldnt get it to better.I guessing this is something that can only be resolved on the street,as this car is auto transmission, and dyno loading can't simulate some of the load the gearbox experienced on the actual road driving conditions.

The AFR lean out just at that moment,i'm thinking it caused by vvt switching on.Something we couldnt see on dyno,a further street tuning should resolve the issue. However, there is an increase on torque right after 4500 up all the way to redline,is much flatter.Peak HP increase is quite minimal and happens a bit later than previous, but it still climbing up until 7600rpm,almost at the rev cut and shift point for the autobox.

I want to review this back and find ways to improve the torque curve and AFR lean out issue at low rpm, will be fine tuning on the road. But anyway, owner now happy with current performance.

Plug and Play harness for Microtech MT-8 Nissan RB20DET

My friend Zyfull is building a drift spec car and i was trusted to build up a plug and play harness for his monster.

All parts are supplied by Zyfull, now harness up and ready but i did'nt manage to get photo of the finished harness, maybe i'll upload it later. It is now already with Zyfull and ready to tune.

Toyota SEG AE111 Blacktop 20v + E-manage Tuning #2

Hi, another 20V Blacktop + E-manage tuning

Engine is stock Blacktop 20V except for HKS 4-2-1 extractor. Rear muffler is stock Levin 20V dual muffler,so its quite restrictive.

The STOCK base reading is on the BLUE curve, the TUNED reading is the RED curve.

Spend almost an hour extracting as much power from the stock ecu,but truely, stock Toyota ecu is very good in keeping their tune the way it is,the is a point where what ever changes made will not yield any significant result. So best today is 127.8 WHP,but with a flat torque curve. This is good for townriding as the owner intention.

He did ask to tune on the cruising mode for more fuel economy, but there is no point tuning the engine in cruise mode bacause the AFR will be always in closed loop feedback, and as Toyota being so superb in keeping their closed loop AFR in control, any changes made will be useless, the ecu will always learns back and keep the AFR within 14.5-15 on cruising. Further more, changes in cruising will cause the Long Term Fuel Trim to be affected and being applied to the overall fuel calculations the next time owner drive his car, and the e-manage tuning will be masked by this, leaving the e-manage tuning 'useless'.

Piggyback have its limit and best for Toyota engine is still Stand alone, unless some company manage to hack the stock ecu and do a re-flash.

Altezza + 2JZ-FSE engine swap

This is my first time seeing this engine in an Altezza, perhaps maybe this is the first 2JZ-FSE transplanted in an Altezza in Malaysia. 2JZ-FSE is a 3 liter inline 6 with direct injection, which means the injector will inject fuel directly into the combustion chamber, which gives good fuel economy and less emission. This engine can run extremely lean Air fuel ratio.

.The engine swap and engine wiring was done at another shop but a few indicators on the instrument panel does not work, hence the owner asked me whether i could make it work, to be honest, i have no idea if it will work at all, as most of the info on the instrument panel is using Multiplex system. When we change the ecu, the system is interrupted, so now the speedo does not work,ABS light was on,Check engine light was on,fuel level indicator keep on blinking plus a few other things.

AE101 SEG 4AG Blacktop 20V + Microtech LT10S

New project already begun,a friend and regular customer at Garage Daz decided he needs something different than the ordinary for his 4AG Blacktop management systems, and suddenly he bought a used Microtech LT10S, and it is not even for 4AG model, it was on Nissan SR16 previously! And now it is my job to make it run on the 4AG 20V.

All Microtech ECU is engine specific, which means it is only can be used on the engine it was programed for. The crank trigger setting is not accessible for users to change, this restriction do have an advantage and disadvantage. The advantage is easier first time start up, which user or tuner doesn't have to spend his time find the correct ignition timing for the engine. All Microtech ECU will fire up at 1st crank on the engine its programmed for if all the wiring are done correctly. The disadvantage is,it is hardly transferable to any other engine. It is not universal like Haltech/Motec/Autronic..etc

So,can we make it run on other engine? Yes we could, the trick is to run all the sensors from that particular engine it is programmed for. In this case, we need to use all SR16 sensors on the 4AG engine. This will involve custom work to fit the sensors on the 4AG, most importantly is the Crank angle sensor (or usually called Trigger in engine management terms).

The owner opt for plug and play wiring to ease installation and reduce downtime, hence a used ecu connector is sourced to make the plug and play harness.

Connector to plug in on the stock 20V wiring loom was sourced from a burnt ECU.

Another view of the salvaged connector.

The LT10S wiring loom

The half finished plug and play loom, ready to be tested in the car.

The connector which will be plug onto the stock wire harness, the other end will be plugged to the Microtech. Shown here is the finished connection without the hot melt glue. The harness will be tested and will be hot glued later to make sure every pin does not move, this is to ensure reliability as it will vibrates when the car is moving.

The car now is waiting for internal surgery on the engine,so i guess i wont be updating this story real soon, but stay tuned for updates in a few weeks time.

Toyota SEG AE111+ Blacktop 20V + E-manage Tuning

A Toyotarian contacted me whether i could do him a tune and i was happy to help. He drove an AE111 Corolla SEG with 4AGE Blacktop 20V swap + a few performance parts and using Greddy E-manage for his fuel and ignition management.

The engine bay

 On the dyno

The HP vs Torque curve plot, the red curve is the previous tune(base run),the blue curve is after tuning, you can see there is an increase about 5hp almost everywhere from the previous tune and a huge increase in HP and torque at the top end after 7500rpm,max rev is about 9000rpm. Max power was increased from 125hp to 135 hp.

The previous tune was so lean and the ignition was so retarded on the top end that the dyno operator did'nt dare to carry on the dyno pull (that is why the red curve ends early than the blue), a test drive later confirms by the owner that the car is performed better than previous tune. Hope he enjoys driving the car now :-)

Project GX81 Mark2 + 1JZ GTE VVT-i update.

Project GX81 already completed, car is up and running. Here is some photo of the car.

Garage Daz chief mech doing some checking.

I dont know what type of bodykit the owner fitted to his car but it looks great.

1JZ GTE VVT-i ...truely high speed machine..great torque, good fuel economy..one of the best of inline 6
